Local MP Impressed with Get Creative Exhibition

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

In February we launched the 'Get Creative' writing and art competition for pupils in Years 5 and 6 from local primary schools (Alveley, Claverley, Highley, Morville, St John's and St Leonard's) and our Year 7 pupils to enter with the chance for six main winners to win Kindle electronic readers. The pupils were set two challenges – to write an adventure story of no more than 500 words and design a front cover for their story.

To help with their challenges pupils attended a writing workshop at Oldbury Wells run by children's adventure and fantasy author, Mark Robson, and worked with our Sixth Form Art and Design students to produce exciting front cover designs. The Sixth Formers had previously attended a workshop at Oldbury Wells run by Marvel cover illustrator Mike Fyles who worked with them to devise cover layouts and designs in traditional and digital media.

We received a high standard of entries from pupils who produced some enchanting stories and bold cover designs and to celebrate we hosted the 'Get Creative' exhibition and prize-giving ceremony in our East Hall on the afternoon of Friday 17th March.

The event was most enjoyable and we were delighted to see the hall packed with pupils and their families who came to view the children's work. Local MP Philip Dunne presented the winners and runners-up with their certificates and prizes. He said, "It was a great pleasure to see so much hard work by the pupils and to see their efforts in their creative writing and art work so well-recognised. It was particularly pleasing to see winners from many local primary schools working with their peers and Oldbury Wells' Year 7 students."

Sixth Form student Josh Brough gave a captivating reading of the three gold winning stories. "The event was a huge success and it was very pleasing to see all the work from our local primary schools and our Year 7 pupils showcased in a colourful exhibition for all to enjoy. Well done to all pupils who took part in the competition and thank you to our Governors who judged the hundreds of entries. I would also like to thank Allied in Partnership and Hills Coaches for sponsoring our prizes," said Mrs Godden.
